About the Name
Desa is short for desahogarse, the spanish word meaning “to undrown onself”. I chose this name because I understand how life goes: sometimes we are in the deep and waves are hitting us from all directions, and other times we are drowning in a glass of water. Either way, support is justified and worth seeking out. Desa Support Services is rooted in self care and community care. I want to help you help yourself; I want to strengthen your bonds to your tribe; and I want to connect you to community resources. When you reach your hand out for support, I want Desa Support Services to be the hand that meets yours.
About Me
My name is Franchesca Peña. I am a certified doula, yoga teacher, and skilled organizer. I have been a registered yoga teacher (RYT) since 2023 after training with Heights Meditation and Yoga in Manhattan. I was drawn to becoming a doula after watching my older sister give birth during the height of the covid-19 pandemic and later supporting my oldest sister in her labor. I received my training from Ancient Song Doula Services in Brooklyn.
I am drawn to this line of work because I want to be a part of people’s village. I love being a doula because the work is collaborative in its nature. As doulas we are always helping each other with questions, sharing resources, and supporting one another. The work serves as a reminder of our inherent interdependence. Lastly, I love that even if I am teaching or supporting others, I must always be a student. I am always learning something new from my clients, my peers, and the professionals I cross paths with.
